Installing Precast

Manor at West Bartow Precast Installation

Precast Fireplace Install

Installation should be done by a professional mason or experienced precast personnel. Individual stones are heavy and may need two or more people to lift the pieces or there may be the need for the use of a forklift or crane. Extra caution should be taken as dropping or lifting these stones can cause personal injury. Also, the edges of the precast pieces are fragile, so extra precaution should be taken not to rest weight on them.

We advise utilizing our services for installation but offer you tips below :

We suggest using brick ties or "L" brackets to anchor to wall, screw brick ties or "L" brackets into stone with masonry screws. If you install to dry wall make sure to anchor into studs. Use mortar between stones and between stone and wall. Use 1/4 inch wood shims or plastic shims between stones to make joints equal. Level each piece as you go up.
Before grouting, mask off joint edges with masking tape, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Stone is porous, if not taped, lime will leach out of joints on stone and make a very fuzzy joint. Blue painters masking tape works best, make sure stone is dry and wiped free of dust or residue so tape will stick. Press tape firmly down to insure strong bond. Use regular mortar for installing, leaving 1" clear from surface then point up with the sand reflecting the proper color for the mortar mix. DO NOT USE GRAY MIX. Mix 4 parts sand 1-1/2 part WHITE mortar mix for point up. If you are unable to get white mortar mix in your area use a formula of 4 parts sand, one part lime, and one part white Portland cement. When grout has set up somewhat and after any final pointing up is done, remove masking tape. At this time you may want to take a piece of short nap carpet or piece of burlap and burnish these joints with it. This gives a better finish and makes the joint look more like the stone itself.

Cleaning Precast

This should be done ONLY after speaking to a qualified Precast associate.

After installing Cast Stone, and if the piece has large stains and has not already been cleaned by the precast manufacturer, then it may be cleaned with Muriatic Acid. This process is best left to the mason or a qualified precaster who is accustomed to using Muriatic Acid. Gloves should be worn as it can cause skin irritation. We recommend using two spray or mister bottles. One should be filled with water and the other filled with a mixture of 1 part Muriatic Acid and 7 parts water. If the wall and floors are already finished you should protect them by taping down plastic drop cloths. Begin by thoroughly wetting the stone area to be cleaned with plain water by misting. You should start at the highest point on the precast piece and work downward. Do not attempt to clean the entire stone at one time. While wet, spray on the Muriatic Acid, taking care to cover the entire area being cleaned. You will notice a slight foaming action. A light scrubbing (with a small nylon bristle brush) while the acid is working will ensure a more even cleaning. Do not leave the acid solution on for more than 30 seconds to one minute to avoid "etching" the stone. Then stop the action of the acid by spraying more water on the area until clear of acid. Continue this process until the entire stone as been acid washed. This process may be repeated for stubborn stains. Acid washing helps remove the whitish film that is a normal result of the masonry process known as efflorescence. It also helps clean up excess mortar and the leaching of the mortar onto the stone. It also exposes some of the silica and gives the stone a beautiful luster. The washing process does leave the stone wet and should be allowed to thoroughly dry before sealing.

Sealing Precast

The great advantage in sealing your precast is that it will be much easier to keep clean. For instance, if anything spills on the stone pieces you will be able to easily wipe it off. We recommend any good quality clear stone sealer to do the trick. The sealer will not change the color or texture of the stone. It is easy to use and should be applied to a clean, dry surface. Thoroughly saturate the stone almost to the point of running. Drying time is 6-8 hours.
